Job Description

Product Owner III – (Developer Experience)

Who is Beast Code?

Beast Code began in 2014 as a small group of friends with a dream to transcend the traditional defense solution paradigm. Today, we are a workforce of approximately 200 beasts headquartered in Fort Walton Beach and driving the next wave of software development and technology on the Emerald Coast of Florida. Our projects are increasing as we build better solutions for industrial and commercial organizations.

Product Owner Description
We are seeking a highly skilled Product Owner to lead the development experience at Beast Code. This Product Owner will champion the developer's perspective within Beast Code, comprehending their needs, challenges, and ambitions. Your objective will be to devise and execute a product strategy that delivers outstanding developer tools and interfaces, fostering a superior development environment.

Beast Code runs a tight ship, but our projects are growing more numerous, and we require additional hands-on deck. We’re looking for a Product Owner to join us as a captain — someone who’ll manage and guide a project to stay on course and arrive at the destination intact and on time.

The primary role of a Product Owner (PO) is to maximize the value of the product through organizing and managing the work of the development team. This includes keeping the Product Backlog in order, so it’s helpful to have some familiarization with the Atlassian suite of Jira and Confluence as well as GitLab.

A Product Owner is a multi-talented manager capable of balancing business management and people management. This crew member is no micro-managing turncoat. They are, in fact, a macro-manager with an eye on the big picture so the dev team can focus on the details and do the heavy lifting.

If this all fits your swashbuckling skills, then sign up and climb aboard. We’ll even let you announce, “I’m the Captain now!” But only once — and it must be in character. (Google: Captain Phillips)

Key Responsibilities:

  • This crucial role is designed for individuals passionate about taking a holistic approach to developer experience, considering a broad array of services and a potentially broad array of developer interfaces (UI, API, CLI, SDKs, Infrastructure-as-Code) to define a unified vision and drive execution and delivery resulting in a best-in-class experience for developers on our platform
  • Your objective will be to devise and execute a product strategy that delivers outstanding developer tools and interfaces, fostering a superior development environment
  • Strategic Vision: Develop and implement a cohesive product strategy for Beast Code’s developer interfaces, aligning with market demands and Beast Code’s strategic goals
  • Developer Advocacy: Be the voice of the developer community within Beast Code, translating their feedback and needs into actionable product improvements and innovations
  • Product Leadership: Lead cross-functional teams in the design, development, and launch of tools and interfaces for developers, with a focus on usability
  • Service Optimization: Continuously evaluate and enhance the developer experiences we offer as they support customers from onboarding to large-scale production workloads
  • Market Analysis: Stay informed about industry trends, developer needs, and competitive offerings to ensure Beast Code’s developer experiences position us to be regarded as a best-in-class platform for developers
  • Performance Metrics: Use metrics and feedback loops to measure the effectiveness of our various developer interfaces, making data-driven decisions to refine and improve the product offering
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, designers, and QA, to deliver product enhancements and new functionalities

This job might be for you if you are familiar with and/or enjoy:

  • Product Backlog Management (i.e. Jira)
  • Developing plans & project roadmaps
  • Prioritizing tasks to optimize team members and achieve maximum efficiency
  • Knowledge management suites (i.e. Confluence)
  • Keep current with software development industry standards/trends

You score Bonus Points if you:

  • Have experience managing multiple teams collaborating on multiple projects
  • Are an expert at Atlassian tools such as Confluence, Jira, and Bitbucket
  • Enjoy pouring over analytics and feedback to improve products and increase business value

The POs are the contact point between the business, the development team, and the client. Thus, we need you to carry these specific skills in your toolbelt:

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a Product Owner, Project Manager, or similar role in a technical environment
  • Deep understanding of UI and API design, and industry-standard practices such as GitOps and Infrastructure-as-Code
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong technical background, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to not only make data-informed decisions but also intuitively balance customer benefit and engineering complexity
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with challenging personalities and to manage conflicts constructively.
  • Agile/Scrum certification or experience is highly desirable.
  • Vision: No, we’re not talking about your eyesight, but your mind. On the business side, a good PO has the capacity to understand the company’s vision. On the team side, a PO has the vision to help the development team break it into smaller pieces and organize it to attain the goal.
  • Mediator: A calm demeanor and thick skin are a must, as you’ll be simultaneously managing the goal and balancing expectations between the team, business, and client. The PO also is a stand-in for the client, so listening to feedback and using it to improve the product is a key function.
