Essential Job Functions

  • Monitors equipment performance, makes improvement recommendations
  • Provides technical support/expertise in the design and installation stages of projects for new assets; modifies existing assets to minimize life cycle cost and maximize asset availability
  • Provides engineering design, configuration, programming, maintenance, trouble-shooting, failure analysis, performance analysis in support of safe and reliable operations of instrumentation equipment
  • Spends time in the field as required
  • Supports factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT) as required
  • Leads and/or participates in incident investigations and root cause failure analysis
  • Develops and conducts annual economic evaluation related to cost reduction and/or revenue generation project opportunities
  • Utilizes mathematical models and simplified methods to evaluate experimental or plant data; recommends solutions to Unit or Maintenance problems
  • Supports the process control group as necessary to implement new analog, digital, and supervisory process control strategies
  • Supports the maintenance team, partners with vendors and contractors to maintain, troubleshoot, repair/replace, test/commission/de-commission, etc.
  • Applies value analysis to repair, replacement, or redesign decisions
  • Reviews project design packages for proper engineering design regarding proper application, reliability, and maintainability
  • Supports development of equipment strategies, understands the impact of equipment sparing and maintenance cost in support of operations excellence and capital efficiency
  • Participates in activities related to safety, risk assessment and safety incident investigations related to instrumentation equipment
  • Abides by all safety procedures and practices applicable to location and position; participates in appropriate safety training; demonstrates commitment to and support of EH&S principles and values; champions safety as necessary
  • Performs other duties assigned by management that fall within the generally expected scope of this position

Experience & KSA’s Required

  • 12 years’ minimum relevant experience in instrumentation and electrical systems design, installation, and maintenance in the petrochemical, chemical process, or refining industries
  • Proficient in Electrical one-line diagrams, Control logic function blocks, PLC ladder logic, Boolean logic, Cause & Effects
  • Proficient in instrumentation cabling, wiring, junction box, UPS, power supply and distribution
  • Complex Problem Solving, identifies complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
  • Critical Thinking, uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Systems Analysis, determines how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques, performance analysis and the ability to solve field problems and familiarity with measurement and control devices from major vendors in the industry
  • Knowledge of safety in design principles, ability to contribute to HAZOPs and Risk Assessments, knowledge and proper use of Hazardous Area codes to be able to classify areas and specify appropriate equipment.
  • Understand Instrumentation Society of America (ISA) and American Petroleum Association (API) Symbols.
  • Basic proficiency in the following areas:
    1. Knowledge of industry codes and standards (i.e. IEEE, ISA, NFPA, NEC, IEC)
    2. Reading process and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) and process flow diagrams (PFDs).
    3. Utilizing cause and effect matrix (C&E)
    4. Instrumentation and measurement technology
    5. Low voltage power distribution and controls
    6. Analyzers and sample systems
    7. Root cause failure analysis
    8. Understanding preventive maintenance strategies.
    9. Ability to apply computer software tools (SAP, Microsoft Office, Instrucalc, Conval 11, Fisher valve sizing, Performance valve sizing)
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite; ability to use database systems and other programs and applications used by this position and at Company
  • Fluent in English language including reading, writing and speaking; ability to read and write at a minimum of high school level; ability to clearly communicate to all levels in organization

Education Requirement

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in Electrical, Electronic, Control Engineering or other applicable discipline required
  • Preferred Certifications/Licenses include
    1. Professional Engineer in Control Systems (P.E., CSE)
    2. Certified Automation Professional (CAP)
    3. Certified Maintenance Manager (CMM)
    4. Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE)
    5. Project Management Professional (PMP)

There will be exposure to various chemicals and compounds, including fumes and smells, some of them hazardous. The employee may enter confined spaces and work in elevated environments. Employee must be able to wear PPE required by the location. Loud sounds and vibrations will be experienced at times. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. All environments are safe with appropriate PPE.
